San Carlos is one of those places that really does have a little bit of everything. It has excellent schools, a strong sense of community, and a small-town feel while still being right in the middle of the Peninsula. Laurel Street is incredibly walkable, with great restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and local businesses, and there always seems to be something happening downtown, whether it’s a farmers market, a community event, or families simply enjoying an evening out.
It’s also an amazing place to raise a family. There are beautiful parks throughout the city, excellent playgrounds, and an incredible number of sports, camps, and activities for kids, from soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, and swimming to dance, music, and plenty more. You tend to see the same families at school, around town, at the parks, and on the sidelines, which creates a genuine sense of connection and community.
For commuters and travelers, San Carlos is extremely convenient. You have easy access to both Highway 101 and Interstate 280, Caltrain right downtown, and both San Francisco and San Jose airports are within easy reach. At the same time, nature is never far away. There are wonderful hiking and biking areas nearby, including Pulgas Ridge and Edgewood Park, along with beautiful neighborhood trails and open spaces.
The different neighborhoods also offer a great variety of lifestyles. You can live close to downtown and walk to restaurants and shops, enjoy the classic neighborhood feel and tree-lined streets of White Oaks, or head into the hills for more privacy, peaceful surroundings, and spectacular views across the Bay. From the top of the hills, the views can be absolutely incredible, especially in the evening when the lights begin to come on across the Peninsula.
What I love most about San Carlos is that it feels welcoming and genuinely livable. It’s polished without feeling pretentious, active without feeling overwhelming, and family-oriented without losing the restaurants, convenience, and energy that make it enjoyable for adults too. It’s easy to understand why people come here and end up wanting to stay for a very long time.
